Study and Training
Since childhood I have been interested in textural forms of art such as collage and sculpture. I began to explore this interest seriously by studying pottery at the University of Saskatchewan and with the famous Hansen-Ross Pottery in Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, Canada.
I later enrolled in the Design Arts Program at Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. I explored the mediums of pottery, jewelry making, silkscreen printing and learned more about colour, design and graphics.
In 1983 I was introduced to the art of papermaking and was truly fascinated. Since then I have experimented with fibres, colorants, printing techniques, recycling, collage and sculptural forms. I have developed a unique style while continuing to learn from other artists and papermakers.
Inspiration and Interests
A year living and working in Thailand provided new inspiration and influence for the abstract works done in the mid 1990's. An example of this influence can be seen in the series titled "Sacred Envelopes". Each of these framed, handmade paper constructions contains a prayer.
My recent work has taken a more representational approach building on my expertise with collage and accommodating my growing interest in still life, form and landscape. This interest was stimulated by studies in watercolor technique and I am currently exploring a combination of these media.
While living in London, England from 2001 to 2003, I had many opportunities to exhibit my work and present workshops to children and adults. This experience fueled my enthusiasm to continue with exhibiting and giving workshops on Vancouver Island.
